stripes and skinnies

when: tuesday, jan. 24, 2012

what i wore:
top: soon maternity (gift card)
jeans: soon maternity (gift card)
shoes: sam & libby (via tjmaxx)

where: work, errands, life group

these are my new skinny (maternity) jeans! after wearing a hair tie on my jeggings for FOUR and a half months, these feel amazing. it’s so nice to have a pair of jeans that fit (even if i did have to go up a size…) and hold me all in. they make me feel a little like my old self. :)

(and if my shirt comes up a little, you can’t see my underwear! mega-score.)

» now let’s take a vote…should a pregnant girl wear horizontal stripes?

33 weeks, and our little dragon baby

  • with the turn of the chinese new year on monday, our baby will officially be born in the year of the dragon. our friend (who lives in china) was telling us how big of a deal this is in their culture—that it promises good luck and many of them try to have a baby in the year of the dragon. (if you want a dragon baby, too, there’s still time! just get busy before may 2 :) )
  • have you read the “don’t carpe diem” article that went viral this week? i wrote back at week 18 that i wanted to share the good and the bad of my pregnancy and be as real as possible. sometimes as women i think we do more to tear each other down than build each other up. and it may not be intentional, but people will say to me, “enjoy every moment of this wonderful journey,” which is sweet but it makes me feel guilty when i don’t. because i honestly don’t enjoy the exhaustion, the crazy emotions, the pain. i know it is worth it-–i am not complaining or discounting that. the suffering will produce something amazing. but it’s not all smiles and rainbows! i have tried to be very open and honest through my weekly updates about how i’m feeling—physically, mentally, emotionally—in case my experience can help someone else realistically prepare for the roller coaster of pregnancy.
  • can someone teach me how to hug my husband with a belly? it is quite awkward for both of us…
  • restless leg syndrome is a real thing.
  • i’m still shocked every time a stranger asks me when i’m due. it’s only happened three times, and i know i look quite pregnant in these photos, but only once when i was asked did i feel like i was wearing something that made it obvious that i am carrying a child.
  • our first baby shower is this weekend! yea! i’m soo excited to celebrate this bump with my girl friends. and there are lots of things we need for the nursery before she comes (monitor, crib sheets, changing pad, diaper pail), so i’m thrilled to get more prepared and figure out what else we need to buy before she comes!

have a great day, friends! i really appreciate you stopping by!

    my favorites from soon maternity

i’m not sure why i didn’t post this a month ago, but i thought i should show you everything i got with my soon maternity gift card! after all, you’re the reason that i won!

i’ve been wearing these items nonstop since they arrived (well…except for the skinny jeans, which i couldn’t get past my thighs :) so i gave those away and just a couple days ago received the bigger size!).

» the gift card was a huge blessing and came at a great time in my pregnancy, just as i was starting to outgrow my normal wardrobe. thanks again so much for your votes!!!

side note: i have no idea why maternity clothes cost so much more than normal clothes. of course sometimes there is a little extra fabric, but it’s hard to justify it when you will only be pregnant for nine months. i will say that soon maternity has extremely high-quality clothing and i’m hoping i can wear these things when i am not pregnant as well. also, they were having a warehouse sale the day i submitted my order, so i lucked out and was able to get a few more things than i thought i would be able to get.

my gift card was $500 and i only had to pay $26 to get these NINE fabulous things (prices shown are current):

    3 TOPS

    3 DRESSES

» i am planning to change from my hospital gown into the trudie dress after she is born! i wear it every weekend and love it!

    3 BOTTOMS

» i have wanted a pair of work pants like the flora capris for a while now. i love them! the waistband folds over so i plan to wear them even when i’m not pregnant.

» i almost didn’t order the leggings (because i know i can buy leggings for cheaper many places, but i have to say that i am glad i got them because i am wearing them a lot). this pair has a low waistband, which works great with tighter tops, whereas my other maternity leggings have a full belly panel and work better with loose tops.

    out tonight

    when: friday, jan. 20, 2012

    what i wore:
    earrings: gift
    dress: soon maternity (gift card)
    shoes: caparros via dsw

    where: work party

when i found out i won the soon maternity gift card, i immediately knew i wanted to get a fancy dress for our company’s annual dinner/dance party. it’s one of the only times during the year that we get dressed up and go out…and i actually do something fun with my hair. so it’s kind of a big deal. :)

i really wanted a dress that would make me feel good about my body. it can be hard when you’re carrying 15 extra pounds (and counting…) to feel attractive. this dress turned out to be perfect! the black color was slimming, and it’s simple and really emphasizes the bump.

(it was a few inches longer than i wanted it to be, so i just hiked it up a bit. ha! you can’t really tell because there is ruching on the sides of the belly anyway.)

p.s. i love to dance, but it was awkward to do so with a belly. when eric and i slow-danced to “my girl,” we had to do more of a side-hug sway…oh the joys! :)

how to dress a baby bump, part 2: 2nd trimester

    • this is a follow-up to part one (1st trimester / up to week 13).
    • this documents my experience in getting dressed during weeks 14-27 of my first pregnancy.
    • because i love clothes so much, i was nervous when i got pregnant that it would be terribly tough to stay stylish. i’ve definitely had some bad outfits (eek!), so my hope is that this will help me be more prepared next time (and maybe this will also help you!).
    • my worst outfits are when i try to hide or downplay my belly. i get compliments when i wear spandex and tight shirts, so i’m taking advantage of that while i can still get away with it!
    • i think my biggest piece of advice is to learn as you go. don’t buy something that you don’t need yet, because you don’t know if it will fit you later or if you’ll even like it. i’m speaking specifically about belly bands and maternity jeans…those are two things i bought early on and never wore because i didn’t like them once i actually needed them.
    • as much as i didn’t want to spend money on clothes that don’t fit my normal body, i needed to continually shop throughout the months as i grew and changed.
    • i borrowed some clothes, but i think it’s important while pregnant to feel as much like your normal self as possible. depending on the style, borrowed clothing might not do the trick. or it might!

    ok, here we go!

it’s strange, but because my bloating went down significantly as i neared the 2nd trimester, my pants weren’t as tight at 14 weeks as they were at 10 weeks. some days they even buttoned (that is, until dinner!). we had already announced our news, but i could definitely hide my bump with loose tops.

» see all my week 14 outfits.

i was really learning in weeks 15-18 that every day is different. you just have to be flexible! there were days in week 18 where my pants actually buttoned, but had no chance of even zipping the next. it’s very strange. (this is also around the time when i started to gain weight.)

at this point, i was getting tired of wearing the same tunics over and over. i was also needling a little more support for my belly. full-panel maternity pants do feel nice…although after a few hours they start to bother me. i continually chose my pre-pregnancy jeggings instead (using the hair-tie trick). the only thing is that you then have to wear a shirt that hides the fact that your pants aren’t buttoned. which can limit the number and type of shirts that you can wear and feel very boring…

    some notes from week 24:

    • i gravitate toward the same two (h&m) sweaters every day.
    • i’m looking forward to having my body and old clothes back!
    • long, stretchy shirts work best for me at this point.

    notes from week 26:

    • i’m definitely starting to need maternity clothes! i was waiting as long as possible, and i think this is the end of the road for me!
    • it’s fun and more attractive to wear tight clothes that show off the bump.
    • i get lots of comments that my bump doesn’t appear as big as it should. i have a super long torso!

» see all my outfits from week 27.

» vests, cardigans, scarves, necklaces, belts and earrings can transform a simple outfit. being able to add these types of things to your outfit makes me feel a little more normal…a little more like old times.

i’m still wearing the same underwear from pre-pregnancy. i think they are probably stretched out now but i decided that i’d rather buy new ones after she’s born.

i’m also wearing the same size bra but will be purchasing a nursing bra in the coming months.
